At UCSB, I was involved in a number of projects, including the construction and characterization of a new high-resolution ion mobility mass spectrometer. The instrument provides a 5-10 fold improvement in ion mobility resolution over previous instruments and has provided some new and interesting results. A second project was the study of the structure and early aggregation states of amylin, a small fibril forming peptide implicated in the pathology of type 2 diabetes. I was particularly interested in identifying key oligomeric species in the early stages of the amyloid fibril formation pathway as well as structural features of the amylin monomer.
