Our latest paper in the Biophysical Journal looks at horizontal gene transfer via plasmids in a growing bacterial colony. In essence, we find that gene transfer is strongly suppressed by the spatial structure of the colony, which naturally forms clonal sectors. Since gene transfer can only occur at the boundaries, the amount of plasmid transfer is much reduced compared to bacteria growing in suspension.
